Being classy is tuning in
It’s been a strange month. Good but strange.
I am embracing a slower pace of life, while still focusing on moving forward with my professional and personal objectives. I have become somewhat of a working housewife (?) It has opened a whole new sphere of my life and brain in a good way. Taking care of something, be it a house, is a work of love.
It sometimes feels like I can tune into different signals that are trying to tell me where to go. I don't always know what they're saying until later. Madrid was one of those.
I could catch signals when I walked the streets of Madrid in an extreme heat wave with a friend. Heat will strip all frills. In clothes and in people. You realize that fewer words are needed to convey what you actually want to say. Movement is limited. Clothes need to be light.
I have been focusing more on the materials that I wear, and have become more finicky on how things feel on my skin. I don’t know if it is age or a weird immune system but my skin will react if it is not treated with love.
This is why I am drawn to lightness: cotton, linen, silk. Raw materials for a raw self.
I have reflected on clothes and class and if they are closely related. Being classy is tuning in, to your vision, what you actually need, what your body wants. Some of the classiest women who ever lived wore simple materials. Simple clothes that let their true self shine. Obviously, some chose more elaborate and glamorous outfits than others, but having good clothes was not their essence. You can tell they felt good in their clothes, comfortable, embraced. Was it the material? Probably, but also the material of their soul.
We live in a time where we are told having good things makes us good. It is not true. We make things good. Things need of our soul to have meaning. It helps when the material is pure, when it lets move freely and feel cocooned.
I feel a deep desire to go to the beach. To feel wet fabric against my skin and the cold splash of when your hair submerges in the water. To feel a soft towel that has been air-dried and the warm eyelashes as I close my eyes against the sun. I need a breeze that I can feel through my linen blouse. A bra that peeps out of my open cotton shirt so I can get some extra rays of sun.
None of it needs to be expensive to feel like this. The linen doesn’t make the breeze feel good, I do, by being there, by letting myself feel it. If you are going to have things, have good things. But don’t forget: you’re the one making them good.
